Does Nascar use GPS systems to keep track of the cars as they go around?
I have a bet with a co-worker and I think I remember my uncle (die hard fan) telling me that the cars have GPSs installed in the hoods or something so that nascar officials can keep track of how many laps behind cars are etc.
Please help me out.
There are scoring loops at all tracks and transponders on the cars. Additionally, races are also still scored by hand. Each owner supplies one person to the scoring box per car per race and the manual scoring is used to verify the loop scoring data. NASCAR is looking into additional wireless scoring but has not completed testing on any such system. Their biggest wireless scoring problems come at the smaller tracks where pit road is in close proximity to the actual track. The device on the car tends to activate the matching device on the track even when those cars are on pit road at the small tracks. That seems to be the hold up in new technology for scoring.
